So, I’ve been trying to be more regular with my posts, starting with the TLT challenge after a break of more than a year due to work.

As I was revisiting my blog, I remembered why I originally made it, not only to share myself with other like or different minded people, but with me in the future. Especially using the Dear Future Me challenge (the one for this year is pending, I’ll be uploading that somewhere around the beginning of September), which gives me a sort of screenshot of how much I’ve changed in such a short while.

I’ve done the 5 Most Awesome-Concept Manga list before, I wanted to go ahead with a music list for this one.

Most people already know of BTS(Bangtan Sonyeondan), if you don’t, they’re a massively successful KPop Band comprising of seven members. Agewise from oldest to youngest – Jin (Kim Seokjin), Suga (Min Yoongi), J-Hope (Jung Hoseok), RM (Kim Namjoon), Jimin (Park Jimin), V (Kim Taehyung) and Jungkook (Jeon Jungkook).

This is simply my list and not a list of the best songs or the most listened to songs in the world.

Without further ado, let’s get right into it

#10 – Sea (Bada)

A hidden track in the Love Yourself : Her album, this quiet track quickly became a loved one.

Album – Love Yourself : Her

Series – Love Yourself

Sea starts of with music that makes you anticipate the first few lines that are to come, considering that the song starts with Namjoon’s desperation tinged rap and then moves into J-Hope’s stronger one, it does not disappoint. This song honestly has more rap than vocal elements, and I generally tend to lean towards the vocal ones. However, this song was raised to a completely different level thanks to the start with RM and J- hope and with Yoongi fortifying it with his passionate performance further on. The song tells us how BTS, after struggling so hard, and after attaining success, are still scared that a small change could take them right back to the start. In a few of my favourite lines, Yoongi and RM mention about how the desert turned into the sea, but they’re afraid that the sea will just turn out to be a blue desert. Another calming point of the song is that throughout the song, the vocals repeat a line like a mantra – Where there is hope, there is always despair. It means you can’t have one without the other, and it is wise to remember that something that can take a turn towards the bad, can also turn good. This is a song that got me through one of the toughest work deadlines I had at the time, so it holds a special place in my heart.

My Favourite Lines –

I thought this was the ocean but it’s a desert
A medium-sized, ordinary idol was my second name
Countless people get cut from broadcast
But someone’s empty spot is our dream
They say some of these kids can’t make it
Cause their agency is too small
I know, I know, I know too
Times when the seven of us had to sleep in one room
With foolish hope that tomorrow
Will be different before we fell asleep
We saw the mirage in the desert
But we couldn’t grasp it
Praying that we’ll remain in this desert till the end
Praying that this isn’t truly our reality

In the end, we reached the mirage
And it became our reality
The scary desert
Became the ocean with our blood, sweat and tears
But why is there this fear
In between the happiness?
Because we know too well that this place is really a desert

#9 – Butterfly

A song that was made into a full length one due to it’s popularity, Butterfly is one of the most beautiful songs BTS has come up with.

Album – The Most Beautiful Moment in Life Part 2(HHYH Pt 2)

Series – The Most Beautiful Moment in Life(HHYH)

A soft song filled with what-ifs and a sense of fear of letting someone go, Butterfly is one of the songs I listen to when I have trouble falling asleep. The soft notes and voices hint at a reluctance to let go since they’re afraid that the person will simply fly away like a butterfly. The music is calming, lulling you into a dream like state before Jungkook can utter his first few lines. One of Jimin’s famous adlibs is during the chorus of the song when he hits the high notes in “naragalkka buseojilkka“. Other than the lines mentioned below, Namjoon’s Rap in this song is particularly brilliant.

My Favourite Lines –

Will you stay by my side
Will you promise me
If I let go of your hand, you’ll fly away and break
I’m scared scared scared of that

Will you stop time
If this moment passes
As though it hadn’t happened
I’m scared scared scared I’ll lose you

Butterfly like a Butterfly
Just like a Butterfly bu butterfly
Butterfly like a butterfly
Just like a Butterfly bu butterfly

#8 – Pied Piper

A playful song for the ARMY(the name of their fan base), from the first of the Love Yourself series, it was well received over the world.

Album – Love Yourself : Her

Series – Love Yourself

Very few artists write and perform songs that diss their own fan bases, but BTS was never one to maintain the status quo. This extremely playful song about the ARMY being lured in when BTS sings, draws a parallel to the story of the Pied Piper. Encouraging the ARMY to also pay attention to their studies and work using cheeky lyrics like “Your parents and director hate me” and “You have so many pictures of me in your room anyway”, BTS got much love and many many jokes for this song, some fans uploading pictures of their report cards and tagging BTS to show them their grades as well. BTS dissed the ARMY, the ARMY dissed them back, a nice push and pull to maintain with your fans indeed.

My Favourite Lines –

Stop
Now stop watching and study for your test
Your parents and director hate me
Video clips, pictures, tweets
V app, Bon Voyage
I know, you can’t help what you like
But stop, interpret the music video later
You have so many pictures of me in your room anyway
It’s not just one hour, it’s a whole year that’ll disappear
So this song is an award I’m giving to you
Good

You’re not being punished
Come here, I’m your paradise
Can’t close your eyes
Can’t close your eyes
You can throw a fit but it’s no use
(Don’t reject me)
Just close your eyes, tune your ears

Follow the sound of the pipe, follow this song
It’s a bit dangerous but I’m so sweet
I’m here to save you, I’m here to ruin you
You called me, see? I’m so sweet
Follow the sound of the pipe

#7 – Magic Shop

One of the tracks from their latest album, Love Yourself : Tear, this song was meant for the ARMY

Album – Love Yourself : Tear

Series – Love Yourself

If you’ve been an ARMY for more than a few weeks, you’ll notice that most albums, notably the newer ones, always have one song specifically meant for the ARMY. This one was special since Jungkook, often regarded as the baby maknae (youngest member), participated in the lyrics and composition. Magic Shop, as mentioned in the MV of Fake Love, the title track for this album, is a method where you trade a bad memory or thing, for a temporarily happy one. This song talks about how BTS lives in every ARMY’s mind and heart, and if the ARMY is sad, they only need to look inside and BTS will comfort them. This sweet concept will bring a smile to the listener. Another one of BTS’s comforting songs, the music is softer than usual and the lyrics are sung sweetly and Jungkook’s sweetly pronounced ttatteuthan cha (Warm tea) makes me smile every single time.

My Favourite Lines –

Days when you hate that you’re you
Days when you wanna disappear
Let’s make a door in your heart
If you open that door and go inside
This place will be waiting for you
It’s ok to believe, it’ll comfort you, this Magic Shop

As you drink a cup of warm tea
As you look above to the Milky Way
You’ll be alright, oh this is a Magic Shop

#6 – House of Cards ( kadeuro mandeun jib)

A chilling song, it was released as a full version due to it’s popularity.

Album – The Most Beautiful Moment in Life Part 2(HHYH Pt 2)

Series – The Most Beautiful Moment in Life ( HHYH)

Sombre and dark, the music will raise goose bumps before Jungkook can even start with his whispered first lines. This song is one that seems to be resigned to accept the fate of self destruction. The song tells the story of boys living in a house of cards, knowing full well how easily and inevitably it will crumble, desperately trying to hold on to what they were. The dark words and resigned, almost whisper like lyrics, and one of Jimin’s best adlibs drive home the message to let things go when the happiness has run it’s course and begun to descend into sadness and pain. It’s also one of the songs that is utterly beautiful when performed live.

My Favourite Lines –

Slow down the time
Please stay just for a little more oh
Please Baby. Calm down
Just a little more

More insecure, more dangerous
So bad (so bad) us, yeah
Enduring more, holding out
So hard, it’s collapsing again

A house made of cards, and us inside
Even if you say you see the end, even if you say it’ll collapse soon
A house made of cards, and stupidly, us
Even if you say it’s a useless dream, just stay a little more like this

#5 – Lie

This solo song by Jimin was the most streamed song after Blood Sweat and Tears from the same album.

Album – Wings

Series – Wings

Lie is one of the most powerful songs I’ve ever heard and never fails to bring an emotional reaction from me. Sombre and dark music coupled with lyrics that sound close to the brink of insanity, driven to the edge by the expectations of the world, make this song a spectacular one. What is so intriguing about this song, is how it moulds itself to the listener, everyone has been faced with a situation that has driven them to clutch their heads in a vain attempt to fix whatever society said was wrong. To everyone, there is a moment where they’ve felt their world was ending, no matter how small or large the problem. Jimin’s lyrics, his voice deceptively calm only to descend into a silent scream of Caught in a lie, his rendition of having lost himself in the expectations of the world hits a sore point in everybody’s hearts.

My Favourite Lines –

I’m still the same me
The me from before is still here but
The lie that’s gotten too big
Is trying to swallow me up

Caught in a lie
Find the me that was innocent
I can’t free myself from this lie
Give me back my laughter

Caught in a lie
Take me out of his hell
I can’t free myself from this pain
Save the me who’s being punished

#4 – Tomorrow

This is one of the underplayed songs of BTS from 2014.

Album – Skool Luv Affair

Series – None

Tomorrow is a harsher song than any of the ones that follow. It’s another BTS song that lashes out against the “Norm”. Generally, most people would encourage you to do what you need to today rather than pushing it to tomorrow, this song tells you the opposite. It comforts you in a way, singing out to tell you that it’s absolutely okay to rest for a little while before throwing yourself into the fight again. During pressing deadlines at work/study, this song has been a huge comfort to me. The music is strong and the song feels like a friend scolding you for being too hard on yourself while telling you not to lose sight of your dream.

My Favourite Lines(Jungkook)

Follow your dream like breaker
Even if it breaks down, oh better
Follow your dream like breaker
Even if it breaks down,
don’t ever run backwards, never

Because the dawn right before
the sun rises is the darkest
Even in the far future,
never forget the you of right now
Wherever you are right now,
you’re just taking a break
Don’t give up, you know

Don’t get too far away, tomorrow
Don’t get far away, tomorrow
Don’t get too far away, tomorrow

#3 – Spring Day (Bomnari)

Instantly becoming a hit due to it’s soft music and concept, this was usually used as the ending song for BTS’s concerts during the Wings tour.

Album – You Never Walk Alone

Series – Wings

Spring Day is one of my ultimate favourites and has been since it was released in 2017. Soft and sweet with a hint of longing, this song is about a friend or a loved one moving far away so you cannot meet them until winter passes and spring comes by again. The lyrics are beautiful and soulfully sung, tugging at the heartstrings and making you yearn to meet with your loved one again. This song is part of my sleep playlist as well, so soft that it lulls you into a dream space with the members’ voices. The rap sections are also soothingly worded and delivered, maintaining the tone and concept of the song.

My Favourite Lines

You know it all
You’re my best friend
The morning will come again
Because no darkness,
No season
Can last forever

Cherry blossoms are blooming
The winter is ending
I miss you (I miss you)
I miss you (I miss you)
If I wait a little longer (if I wait)
If I stay up a few more nights
I’ll go see you (I’ll go see you)
I’ll go pick you up (I’ll go pick you up)

Past the end of this cold winter
Until the spring comes again
Until the flowers bloom again
Stay there a little longer
Stay there

#2 – Blood Sweat and Tears ( Pi Ttam Nunmul)

One of the most popular songs, it was considered dethroned only after Fake Love was released almost two years later

Album – Wings

Series – Wings

This song is another one of my favourites, and it’s special because it’s the first BTS song I heard, back in 2016. The strong lyrics combined with the amazing music gives us one of the best songs created by BTS. Even though the song is not a happy one, the music makes you want to try out the signature steps and scream Wonhae Manhi Manhi at the top of your lungs. Another truly charismatic song, it possesses a mysterious aura, speaking many theories.

My favourite lines(J-Hope and Yoongi)

I don’t care if it hurts, tie me up
So I can’t run away
Grab me tightly and shake me
So I can’t snap out of it
Kiss me on the lips lips,
Our own little secret
I wanna be addicted to your prison
So I can’t serve anyone that’s not you
Even though I know, I drink the poisonous Holy Grail

#1 – Fake Love( Extended Version)

For most of the world, this was the global awakening in May 2018

Album – Love Yourself : Tear

Series – Love Yourself

This song is undoubtedly the one I listen to the most. Two versions of this song were released and you can watch them on YouTube. The extended version, released later, is the one I’m particularly fond of. My favourite part – Namjoon also mentioned this in a VLive, is Jimin’s desperate cry of Fake Love in the chorus. The song is a lament, telling us how the love that the members thought was true love, actually turned out to be fake using beautiful comparisons and soulful lyrics. The song is far from subdued and quiet, unlike a ballad, and it feels like a scream against the idea of true love. I can’t really explain it, but something in this song simply draws me in. In addition to the below lines, the rap sequences by RM and Yoongi are brilliant.

My favourite lines(Jimin and V)

For you, I could pretend like I was happy when I was sad
For you, I could pretend like I was strong when I was hurt
I wish love was perfect as love itself
I wish all my
weaknesses could be hidden
I grew a flower that can’t bloom in a dream that can’t come true
