Chapter 1 – Here Today, Gone Tomorrow

quote taken from this chapter

You can find the previous chapters here

The clatter of falling vessels was loud as the maids crashed into the walls, making way for the queen to run past them. The din had finally stopped when the library doors swung open and the panting queen’s shadow fell upon the man sitting at the desk in the centre, surrounded by shelves of books.

She watched him stand up and bow slightly, awaiting her words.

Why did you allow him to leave?

This is part two of the Quest of the Living Water, read the first part here.

He stood motionless, staring at the huge man in front of him in fear. 9 feet tall, the giant shot him a glance filled with malice.
“What is a kid like you doing here?”, he asked in a terrifying voice.

A figure moved quietly under the cover of night, never straying from the shadows. It clutched a package wrapped in dull brown paper.

Nick awoke groggily to a white room. The Saludom, his mind informed him, he’d been asleep for a whole day. The castle felt eerily quiet and he sat up to take note of his surroundings.

Widening his mental field, he could sense two jades on the other side of the curtains that we’re pulled for his privacy. A doctor and a nurse, he presumed. His palm felt tight and he brought it up and curled and uncurled his fingers.

Chapter 12: Grieving

For some reason that I have no idea about, when I posted my last chapter, the last few extremely important lines did not get posted, so I’m going to add those lines in bold right below this line

Aurora woke up after a short nap feeling less sore than she had been before. Conjuring the sword really took a lot out of her, she supposed. Still, it wouldn’t hurt to visit Peritia again, just to ask her if the lessons would be changing tomorrow. She imagined they would.

Putting on her simple clothes, she wondered if Nick had enough confidence in her abilities or simply thought she was expendable. She’d really have to visit him today.

Just as she opened her door, a flurry of long limbs seemed to dart by. A little taken aback, she peered out to see Quesios hurrying down the hallway and she followed him just in time to watch him freeze at the sight of Nick coming out of the Library with a few texts in hand.

On the screen, in various sizes, over and over again was the number 24.

“I think we have our answer”, said Aurora shakily

Fate smiled as she watched the entire scene play out in front of her. Turning to the near comatose girl lying on a bed beside her, she whispered,

It begins

The five of them worked in relative silence in the dungeon as the man remained unconscious. Quesios and Maya were working on some sort of simulation to determine the effect on the body and mind during the second Immersion. Aurora was attempting to find any more anomalies in his chart by comparing it with hers.

Amy had already started planning the next few days of learning for Aurora, but unbeknownst to her, Fate was turning towards a certain man who was currently peacefully sleeping in his armchair.

Nick woke up with a jolt as he felt a presence behind him and an eerie voice whispering

It’s time

A harsh wind blew across the dead terrain as a lone knight fought a losing battle against the shadows. Dodging another blow, he wondered how much longer he would have to hold on, how long would it take them to find him.

Concluding that the sensors were not detecting him yet, he closed his eyes, concentrated.  The shadows stayed back, unable to predict his next move. With a blinding glow, the double edged sword in his hand shot a beam of Cyan light into the sky, lighting up the barren land before  he slumped to the ground in a heap.

The shadows stayed still as they watched his body disintegrate. Nick smiled as he saw the walls of the castle before him as his eyes closed completely.

Helping her up and still chuckling he wondered if he’d ever heard Arderine laugh this freely before. Their banter continued till he looked at his scanner.

Looking up at the woman in front of him, he could utter only one word

“Impossible!”

Quesios was worried. Scratch that, he was terrified. What had gone wrong? How had the Immersion gone so wrong?
